Somerset Dragons Futsal: The Story
The Story so Far
Thanks for getting this far to read the Dragons story, so far. Billy Whittaker, the director of SDF, always had a long term vision of having a Futsal provision in Somerset which still to date there is no full time futsal provision. Where to start? Middle of a pandemic, no indoor facilities available? Billy decided to start sessions in Street, which started of with 2 members, within the next month the session location changed to Shepton Mallet Leisure Centre which saw a huge influx of players join, week after week.
At first, the sessions were designed for primary school aged children, but soon the group was too big and the club welcomed Jarrad Cave and soon after, Dan Cock to the coaching team, who are still ever present at the Shepton Mallet and Wells sessions. Shaun and Annie have been with us over the last 6-12 months with all the coaching team building up a great rapport with their respective groups, creating a fun, inclusive and safe environment.
The club has had steady growth with the introduction of tots, mini's and girls only session on a Saturday, expansion across Somerset to Wincanton, after school clubs, and a football club partnership with North Somerset JPL who have shown a huge buy in to Futsal and the benefit it has to their players.
What is next? We are now dedicating our time to providing a holiday club provision, one to one, small group sessions and a summer league for grassroots clubs in Somerset.
The challenges? Meeting the demands of growing a club, and finding indoor space available!
Thankyou to the coaching team, facilities, club partnerships, and our members for your continued support.
Keep your eyes peeled!
